Bio: Debbie Lynn Tuttle is a full-time professional dance instructor in the Washington DC, Northern Virginia, Mid Maryland region. She is a UCWDC Champion, Pro-Am Instructor, and Dance Event Coordinator. Lessons include individual, couple, group classes, specialty workshops with a concentration in West Coast Swing (WCS) and Hustle dance styles, as well as providing private lessons in most of the ballroom dances.

Debbie Lynn‘s dance roots go back to days in ballet, jazz, modern, hula and international ballroom classes. Debbie Lynn studies extensively with many top professionals and has the distinction of being a Premier West Coast Swing Dancer.

Debbie Lynn‘s experience and accomplishments in the dance community provide her students with an extensive knowledge base to learn and grow. She knows what it takes to become an accomplished dancer. She also provides coaching to gain a competitive edge in styling and musicality, teaches the basics for building confidence in dancing, and gives tips to help you look good when dancing in social settings.

She supports the local dance community by teaching, competing, DJing, choreographing, judging, holding weekly dances, bi-monthly workshops, and enrolling in Pro-Am competitions and exhibitions with students of all levels.

Bio: Erica Smith is a versatile dancer from Silver Spring, MD with extensive backgrounds in ballet, hustle, salsa and west coast swing. With more than 10 years of ballet experience, Erica performed with ballet companies from all over the world including, but not limited to, the Joffery Ballet, the Royal Ballet, Dance Theater of Harlem, and the Washington School of Ballet prior to beginning her partner dance training.

Erica was first introduced to hustle and salsa in her years at UC Berkeley School of Law, and has been adding her sparkle to the social dance world ever since. With almost 20 Advanced Amateur 1st place wins under her belt, Erica was arguably the Top Female Amateur Hustle Competitor for two years prior to her professional status. Since becoming a professional competitor, Erica has garnered 1st place in numerous Professional Just Hustle and Invitational Jack & Jill Hustle divisions across the country.

In 2007, Erica was pictured in US Weekly alongside Shane Sparks and in TV Guide Magazine coined Erica the “Disco-Dancing Lawyer” after she performed a Just Hustle that earned her a spot in Vegas on the syndicated television series “So You Think You Can Dance.” In 2010, Erica pioneered and co-choreographed the first ever Hustle Flash Mob which has been viewed more than 41,000 times on YouTube. The Hustle Flash Mob has garnered the attention of media outlets and has been performed both nationally and internationally. The International Hustle Dance Association (IHDA) has named Erica Smith a “New Pioneer” for her contribution to Hustle.

In 2008, Erica won a US Open Swing Dance title in the Strictly Hand Dance division and in 2010 Erica became a World Professional Triple Threat Champion. In addition, Erica has been at the top ranks of west coast swing for over three years and currently competes at the All-Star/Professional level.

In addition to competing, Erica is very passionate about sharing her love of dance with her students. Erica has received Top Teacher awards at MADjam, Swing Fling, DCSX and Disco America. In addition, Erica was awarded the 2012 and 2013 IHDA Top Female Teacher Award.

Erica is a brilliant dancer who guarantees to leave an impression on her audiences and her students.

Bio: Kay Newhouse is known throughout the DC West Coast Swing social dance community and around the country for her playful dance style and friendly warmth. She believes that the best dancing comes from sharing your own joy on the dance floor, and learning how to find the wonderful connection that dance brings with another person, through music, in your own voice.

Kay fell in love with West Coast Swing in the Washington DC area in the mid 90s, and has traveled to WCS dance conventions around the country for more than a decade. She advanced to the highest pointed level of WCS Jack & Jill competition, All-Star, in 2006, and continues to compete successfully at events from coast to coast, but finds the essential soul of West Coast Swing to be social dancing. As a competitor on the national circuit, she has a solid understanding of the most current form of this rapidly-changing street dance, and loves to help each student learn. She and her teaching partner, Matthew Smith, are known for group classes that emphasize responsiveness within both leader and follower roles. Their workshops are elegantly planned, rich in deep information for dancers of multiple levels, accessible and fun.

As a one-on-one teacher, Kay is knowledgeable, patient and thorough. She enjoys customizing instruction to your learning style and pace, while keeping an eye on the prize: happy dancing to music you love.

Bio: Kiona Leah started her dancing career at the age of 7 with ballet and tap, but later decided that she was not destined to be a prima ballerina. As a Freshman in college she tried ballroom dancing, but it wasn’t until she found swing that she truly fell in love. Today, Kiona is a respected West Coast Swing and Lindy Hop Instructor in the Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD area. Since her start in swing in 1999, Kiona has danced competitively in couples, on teams, and as an individual for over 12 years and been a dance instructor for over 10. In addition to her training as a dancer, Kiona holds several certifications in physical fitness and rehabilitation. She Combines her dance experience with her physical fitness training to bring her students a unique perspective on the finer points of movement emphasizing not only fun, but efficacy. One of Kiona’s greatest joys is taking brand new dancers and helping them to learn how their body naturally moves and why it does the crazy things it does on the dance floor. If you would like a lesson with her, you can usually find her at the Hollywood Ballroom Dance Center in Silver Spring, Maryland on Friday nights. Bio: Lara began her teaching career at age 15 in Tap, Jazz, Break dancing. She also performed with an adult dance troupe and traveled the US and Canada to judge youth dance competitions. While pursuing her BFA in Dance, Lara taught Modern, Ballet, Hip Hop, Tap and Jazz at studios and health clubs in the area. In 1997, Lara began continued her dance journey through Ballroom and Latin. She studied extensively with former and currently US Champions, and began competing professionally in both International and American Ballroom and Latin styles on the national circuit in 1998. Lara and her former partners placed top five in the Rising Star Professional American and Standard Ballroom divisions 1998-2000 and top three nationally in Lindy and Salsa from 2001-2007.

By 2007, Lara fell in love with West Coast Swing. She competes and teaches on the national and international West Coast Swing circuit. Lara and her past partners have won numerous national titles in the Classic Rising Star and Classic divisions. She and a former partner placed top 15 in the Classic Division of 2008, and a year later she placed 7th the in the All Star Jack & Jill division in 2009 US Open Swing Championships. She has continued to win numerous titles in both the All Star Jack & Jill and Strictly divisions nationally. Her most recent wins being 1st place in All Star Strictly division at Michigan Classic and a 1st place at Tampa Bay Classic, and 4th Place in the Sophisticated Routine Swing Division at the 2014 US Open Swing Championships.

Lara as enjoyed teaching youth and looks forward to staring a youth program in 2015. She taught for a Jr Cotillion from 2009-2010, and she is a P/T dance professor at Calvary Christian College for the youth and adult programs there. She also teaches youth and adult programs at her own studio.

Lara is a sought out instructor not only because of her diverse background of dance, but because of her genuine passion and love of movement and dance. Lara is great at encouraging and helping her students attain their goals in dance, while making the process of growing and learning a fun and rewarding one. Lara currently teaches West Coast Swing, Salsa, East Coast Swing, Ballroom, Latin, and Country.

Bio: Drawing on his many years of experience in this rapidly changing dance, he combines a contemporary sense of lyrical musicality with a passion for the fundamentals of west coast swing. Both Kay and Matt balance a sense of the fun of performance and competition with a strong belief that the essential soul of this dance resides within everyone's reach, on the shared social floor. Matt uses clear and accessible teaching that emphasizes responsive partnership to build mutual creativity and social proficiency within the framework of West Coast Swing.
